πŸ–οΈ The Front of Our House β€” Lawai Beach

Right on Lawai Road, steps from the door (next to the Beach House Restaurant).

One of the best snorkel spots on the whole south shore β€” parrotfish, tangs, butterflyfish, and green sea turtles just feet from shore over a protective reef. August lands in the calmest, clearest window. Small beach, can shrink at high surf, and roadside parking fills fast β€” but we're walking. Snorkel rentals right by the restaurant.

Top 3 Beaches

BeachDist.Why go
Poipu Beach Park~8 minNamed #1 beach in the U.S. in 2026. Lifeguards, a protected shallow keiki lagoon, snorkeling sandbar, and monk seals on the point. Everyday beach-day base.
Baby Beach (Poipu)~9 minSheltered, shallow cove β€” calmest water on the south shore. Tide pools and resting turtles. Best for the youngest kids.
Shipwreck Beach~13 minDramatic sand + cliffs by the Grand Hyatt. Not for swimming/snorkeling (rip currents), but great for scenery, confident-swimmer boogie boarding, and the Mahaulepu clifftop trail.

πŸ’‘ Open Ideas

  • Waimea Canyon & KōkeΚ»e State Park β€” all-day scenic drive and lookouts, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Both cars.
  • Spouting Horn β€” famous blowhole, ~2 min from the house. Quick, easy, kid-pleasing stop.
  • SNUBA Tours β€” right on Lawai Road; a gentle intro to going underwater for the family.
  • Kuilau Ridge Trail β€” easy–medium family hike through lush interior with mountain views.
  • Red Dirt Waterfall β€” 10-min photo stop en route to Waimea Canyon.
  • Beach days β€” Lawai (out front), Poipu Beach Park, Baby Beach (see the Beaches tab).

🧳 Suggested Packing List

Tuned for a south-shore, snorkel-heavy, kid-friendly August trip.

Beach & water

  • Reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen β€” Hawaii bans oxybenzone/octinoxate; bring zinc-based SPF 30–50.
  • Water shoes with sturdy soles β€” essential for rocky/reef beaches like Lawai.
  • Rash guards / UV swim shirts (especially for the kids) & 2+ swimsuits each.
  • Snorkel gear if you have it (rentals are available locally too); goggles for the kids.
  • Sun hats, polarized sunglasses, dry bag, beach bag, reusable water bottles.
  • Floaties / puddle jumpers for the little ones at Baby Beach.

Sun & skin

  • After-sun aloe / lotion, SPF lip balm, insect repellent (for hikes & evenings).

Clothing

  • Light, breathable everyday clothes; flip-flops + comfortable walking/hiking shoes.
  • One resort-casual outfit for the upscale dinners (Beach House / Merriman's).
  • A light layer/rain jacket for the snorkel boat and Waimea Canyon (cooler up high).

Kids & family

  • Car seats / boosters (confirm what's coming with the rental).
  • Snacks, small toys/cards for downtime, kids' water shoes.

Health & tech

  • Motion-sickness meds for the Na Pali snorkel boat.
  • Basic first-aid kit & any personal medications.
  • Phone/camera with a waterproof case, portable charger, daypack.

Don't forget

  • IDs & payment cards β€” and the Costco membership card if doing a bulk run.

β˜€οΈ Anticipated Weather

Typical late-August climate for Poipu / south Kauai β€” the island's sunniest, driest side.

What to expect

August is the warmest month, but steady trade winds keep it comfortable. Poipu sits on the dry, leeward side, so rain is uncommon β€” expect mostly sunny days with the occasional brief passing shower. Water is warm and inviting for snorkeling. Summer can bring south swells, so surf may be up on some days (great for boogie boarding at Shipwreck, and why the calmer, protected beaches shine for the kids).

πŸ“Œ These are historical averages, not a forecast. Check a live forecast a few days before departure for the actual outlook.
